Mattress Topper Guide

What is a mattress topper?

A mattress topper is an extra layer that is approximately 5-8 cm thick. It is used on top of the primary mattress and should not be confused with a mattress protector. The purpose of the mattress topper is to provide flexible sleeping comfort. Depending on the type and firmness, it ensures an ergonomic sleeping position. A mattress topper also helps to protect the bed from wear and dirt, thus extending the bed's lifespan.

Which mattress topper should you choose?

When investing in a new mattress topper, it is important to understand your needs. For instance, decide whether you prefer a soft or a firm surface. Similarly, your sleeping comfort can be significantly affected by whether you choose a ventilating latex mattress or a pressure-relieving mattress topper with memory foam.
The firmness of a mattress topper is determined by its core quality. A mattress topper with a core quality of 50 kg/m3 has a medium firmness and is suitable for most people. The higher the core quality, the firmer the mattress topper, while a core quality below 50 kg/m3 indicates a softer mattress topper. Borg Lux mattress toppers have a core quality of 60 kg/m3, making them more firm. Most other mattress toppers in our range have a core quality of 50 kg/m3.

Mattress topper with memory foam

A mattress topper with memory foam has the unique property of moulding to the body's warmest pressure points. This means that memory foam provides a supportive and flexible mattress topper, giving the body the necessary relief. Be aware that memory foam is affected by room temperature. If you sleep in a very cold room, the mattress topper will feel firmer. If, on the other hand, you sleep in a warm room, the mattress will feel softer and usually warmer as well. However, you can slightly regulate the heat in the mattress by adjusting your other elements, such as your duvet or mattress protector. It's recommended to use a mattress protector in pure cotton, silk, or from Temprakon on top. This will both protect the mattress while also allowing you to achieve the full benefits of the topper's properties.

Mattress topper with latex

Latex is a rubber material derived from a tree. It is an extract that is harvested and used to make natural latex. This also makes a latex mattress topper more natural than other types of foam.
Latex mattress toppers are firmer than other types and will therefore not mould to your body like memory foam does. However, latex has the advantage that it is perforated in the mattress, meaning there are holes through the mattress to adjust firmness and breathability. The size and number of holes adjust the firmness of the mattress and also affect how much heat can pass through it. All these features make latex mattress toppers ideal for a more temperate night's sleep. Below you can find the different measurements of mattress toppers:
